02/12/2011 - FIS-OPA Cancellation races in Val Gardena
The FIS-OPA cross-country races scheduled in Garden/Gröden for December 10th and 11th have been cancelled today, Friday December 2nd.

The FIS-OPA coordinator for Italy, former cross-country athlete Pepi Ploner explained that this decision was based on course inspection as well as the current weather forecast for the next few days. “We are sorry about this cancellation” says OC General Manager Stefania Demetz. “The entire team has been working hard and I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of them.

”The mayor of St.Christina Eugen Hofer has been the initiator of this event and stated: “The professionalism and passion of the organizers was exemplary. Too bad that we are not able to host the races.”

On December 10 and 11,

It is the second highest cross-country ski racing series of the International Ski Federation FIS. The competitions will be held at the Nordic Ski Centre of Monte Pana, above S. Cristina. The organizers are expecting around 300 athletes from 20 nations.

On Monte Pana will be held a total of four races: two women and two men's races. On the first day the individual competition takes place in the classical style. The ladies must complete 5km, and the men 10km. The next day, the 10km skating style (ladies) and 15km (men). The start of the race takes place at 9.30 (women) and at 11.00 (men).

It is with great excitement that we agreed to organize this international cross-country ski event. It poses a new challenge and we are glad to take it on in cooperation with the Ski Club Gardena/Gröden and the Alpine Training Center of the Carabinieri Police Force in Selva/Wolkenstein. The picturesque panorama at the feet of the Sassolungo/Langkofel mountain, the challenging course and the enthusiasm of the local audience will help deliver two thrilling and spectacular racing days for spectators, volunteers and athletes alike. In the name of the FIS Cross Country Continental Cup Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome all the teams who are visiting Gardena/Gröden for the first time and wish the athletes successful races and a good stay here in our valley.
