Val Gardena: an artist stronghold
The appreciation for art of the valley people is renowned in the whole world, especially the art of secular and religious wood carving. Seeing by touch, feeling by sight: this is how manual labour becomes art. Feelings, imagination and determination all contribute to the realisation.
Wood carving is traditional in Val Gardena and has been so since the 17th century, to overcome the long, winter period. Until 100 years ago the valley was still a secluded, difficult to reach high mountain valley: this forced the valley people to find a sideline occupation. They carved wood during winter and during summer they took their products into the world and sold them. A trade deriving from hardship which can still be marvelled at today.
