Cristina Val Gardena’s train – also known as ‘la ferata’ in Ladin – was built between 1915 and 1916 in just four and a half months for military purposes by hundreds of thousands of Russian prisoners of wars, soldiers, and civilian workers. 1960 signalled the end of the Val Gardena train, due to the rise of cars on the road. Today, a promenade follows the former rail track from Ortisei (where you can find the original Austrian locomotive) via S. Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena, peppered with information boards and pictures from local archives.
