98 When the work is a reflection of the master’s skill, you know there must be plenty of masters in this Dolomite valley. After all, there are many beautiful works of art scattered around the valley. It’s called ‘the valley of woodcarvers’. This special craftsmanship came about at the start of the 17th century, developed in the local farm. Families would carve wooden toys, representations of saints and scenes from their everyday farm life. The resulting works obtained fame and world renown, and so woodcarving, sculpting, and painting became an important business.
