Flexible but not always easy

Drive on the Brennero motorway (A22) to reach Val Gardena:

  • If you’re travelling from the north, travel via Innsbruck-Brennero-Chiusa (motorway exit: Chiusa); continue on SS242D (Chiusa - Val Gardena); you’ll arrive in Ortisei in around 20 minutes.

IMPORTANT: From 1. January 2025, the Lueg bridge will only be passable in one lane

From 1. January 2025, traffic on the Lueg bridge (located on the A13 Brenner motorway on the Austrian side, south of Innsbruck) will be temporarily limited to one lane in each direction in order to allow for major maintenance work to ensure optimal safety. Here are the most important information:

  • From January, the Lueg bridge will be open to traffic in one lane, but on around 170 days a year it will be open to traffic in two lanes – depending on the direction of travel. The exact driving calendar is being prepared.
  • Trucks over 3.5 tonnes must use the left-hand lane when there are two lanes, as this lane has a higher load-bearing capacity. A test run in the summer showed that heavy traffic can cross each other without problems and that traffic jams can be reduced on busy days.
  • It is not possible to have two lanes throughout for reasons of bridge safety.
  • Other measures include a control system for recording weights, additional bans on lorries, section control, new display panels and a Europe-wide information campaign.
  • If you’re travelling from the south, exit the motorway at the Bolzano Nord sign, take a left towards Ponte Gardena and continue on the SS242 until Val Gardena.

OUR RECCOMMENDATION: Guests staying at one of the Val Gardena Tourism Associations’ partners will receive the exclusive and free Val Gardena Mobil Card upon check-in. With it, they can use public transport in the valley, including ski shuttles, for free, getting from A to B easily by using green alternatives to cars. Val Gardena boasts a vast, well-connected bus network – and many of the destinations can be reached using the lift facilities.
