Travelling by train is easy and safe. It’s a relaxing and a green mode of transport, to boot!

Make the most of the countless direct trains leaving daily from Munich, Vienna, Rome, Florence, Bologna, Venice, and Milan to South Tyrol. Prefer to wake up to the sight of the mountains? Why not book a night train from Rome, Hamburg, or Düsseldorf? Travelling with children? Good news: every train company has amazing offers just for you.

The closest train stations to Val Gardena are in Bolzano (40 km), Ponte Gardena (18 km), Chiusa (23 km), Bressanone (34 km). From the train and bus stations you can reach Val Gardena as follows:

You can book a direct train on Trenitalia using the Freccia offer (train + bus) when travelling to Val Gardena. DB/ÖBB passengers travelling on an EC train can choose to buy a "Anschlussticket Südtirol"’ ticket for € 5,00. They can use public transport to travel between the station and their accommodation on their arrival and departure date.

When travelling from Munich, you can hop onto one of the many daily trains to Bolzano or Bressanone.

The Deutsche Bahn EC and high-speed trains Railjet require less than four hours to reach their destination – no changes required. Munich is a travel hub, meaning you can easily travel from all over Germany via Munich to Val Gardena.
Trains are a green mode of transport which are also more affordable! Make the most of the Super Sparpreis Europa tickets: travel for as little as €19.90 from Munich to Bolzano, or for €46.90 between Frankfurt and Bressanone. What a bargain!

Once in Bolzano, all you need to do is take a regional bus, a local taxi company, Südtirol Transfer or car sharing to reach all of Val Gardena’s villages.

When travelling from Austria, the ÖBB will take you right across the Brennero Pass to Bressanone and Bolzano, South Tyrol’s capital. Once in Bolzano, all you need to do is take a regional bus, a local taxi company,Südtirol Transfer or car sharing to reach all of Val Gardena’s villages.

With the daily Railjet from Vienna (07:08) there is a direct connection via St. Pölten, Linz Salzburg and Innsbruck to Brixen and Bozen (arrival in Bozen at 13:59). The return journey leaves Bolzano every morning at 06:02. It is worth booking in advance: ÖBB Sparschiene tickets are much cheaper.

Booking in advance is always worth it: the ÖBB Sparschiene-Ticket is a failproof way of saving plenty of money!

When departing from Switzerland, you can travel to South Tyrol and Val Gardena numerous times a day thanks to the SBB‘s Railjet Express & Eurocity via Innsbruck and the Brennero Pass. Once in Bolzano or Bressanone, all you need to do is take a regional bus, a local taxi company,Südtirol Transfer or car sharing to reach all of Val Gardena’s villages.

If you’re travelling from southern Italy, Trenitalia, Italo, DB, and ÖBB offer daily direct connections from the most important Italian cities to Bolzano. FRECCIALink Val Gardena (one ticket for a direct Freccia train + bus connection to Val Gardena)

Travel directly to the Dolomites and Val Gardena with Trenitalia‘s fast trains, the Frecce, and the FRECCIALINK (one ticket for Freccia + bus connection). Travel from Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan, Verona, Bologna, and other Italian cities. Use the FRECCIALINK to continue travelling to your destination in Val Gardena (Ortisei, Santa Cristina or Selva Val Gardena). Want to make your travel even smoother? During the summer months, there are several direct Frecciarossa connections to Bolzano:

• Frecciarossa Bolzano – Milan: with stops at Ora, Trento, Rovereto, Verona, Peschiera del Garda, and Brescia. Twice a week, on Saturday and Sunday mornings,: departure from Milan at 08:15, return from Bolzano at 17:45.
• Frecciarossa/Intercity Pescara – Bolzano: with stops at Verona, Bologna, Rimini, Riccione, Ancona. Twice a week, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Departure from Pescara at 13:02 and 14:15, and return from Bolzano at 07:45 and 10:42.
• Frecciarossa/Intercity Bolzano – Ancona: direct weekend connection, with stops at Trento, Rovereto, Verona, Bologna, Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Pesaro, and Senigallia. Here are the schedules: departure from Ancona at 07:45-10:42, return from Bolzano at 14:38 – 15:35.
• Eurocity Bolzano – Venice: direct weekend connection, with stops at Trento, Rovereto, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, and Mestre. Departure from Venice at 11:31 and 15:35, return at 11:31 and 15:31.
• Intercity Lecce – Bolzano: with stops at Bari, Ancona, Rimini, Riccione, Bologna from June 7 to September 15, 2024. Twice a week, on Friday and Saturday mornings. Departure from Lecce at 08:20; return from Bolzano on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10:42.

There is also a direct train from Bolzano-Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples with a stop in Rome. The train departs Naples at 07:30 & 09:41 with arrival in Bolzano at 13:48 & 15:48. The return journey departs Bolzano at 13:12 & 15:12 and arrives in Naples at 19:21 & 21:33.

Trenitalia, Italo DB, ÖBB, and SBB all have interesting and affordable offers if you’re travelling with children.

When travelling with Trenitalia, children under 15 travel free when part of a group between 2 and 5 people. With the Free Kids Offer on Trenitalia's Intercity trains, children up to 15 years old travel for free and parents receive a 40% discount.

When travelling with Italo, children under 14 travel free when accompanied by at least one adult and parents receive a 50% discount.. The offer is valid for groups between 2 and 4 people.

When travelling with ÖBB, DB, and SBB, children under 14 also travel free or receive a 50% discount. The number of children travelling with their parents or grandparents needs to be listed on the accompanying adult’s ticket. When booking, don’t forget to include the number of children who will be travelling with you!

When travelling by public transport in South Tyrol, children under 6 travel free, while children under 14 travel at a discounted price (Junior Fee).

Insam Express, a Val Gardena courier service (+39 0471 796110), and Trenitalia’s Easy Baggage Service will pick up your luggage (suitcases, bags, rucksacks, bikes and skis/snowboards) from your home and ship them to your hotel in Val Gardena. You can store your luggage in Bolzano train station at Basecamp Dolomites.

You can travel with your bike on Trenitalia trains – and that includes foldable bikes and traditional ones. Read all the T&Cs concerning bike transport before travelling.

Long-distance trains from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland also accept bikes. Some trains even offer additional spaces where you can park your bike in a suitcase/bike compartment. Don’t forget to book or you may get in trouble onboard.
