On the northern side of the Seceda ridge, the dramatic rock formations of the Odle/Geisler Group rise sharply with their jagged, needle-like peaks. In contrast, the southern slopes open into gentle alpine meadows, which in summer are covered with over a hundred species of alpine flowers. A vast network of hiking trails leads across this landscape, passing numerous traditional, family-run mountain huts and continuing into the Cisles Valley in the Puez-Odle Nature Park, a perfect starting point for further hikes to surrounding peaks.
Below lies the Mastlé Alm, from where popular routes lead to the panoramic summit Pic Mountain and the scenic terrace Sëurasas, both offering exceptional views over Val Gardena.
Reinhold Messner, one of the world’s greatest mountaineers and a native of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, advises:
“Experience the Dolomites consciously and responsibly. Respect the uniqueness of this landscape—a remarkable blend of alpine pastures and wild nature. Feel the values of the mountains—silence, calm, strength, and untouched nature—which reflect the deep connection between humans and the natural world. For over 1,000 years, people have interacted positively with this landscape—without this relationship, even wilderness would suffer.”
The name “Odles” (Geisler Group) originates from the Ladin language of Val Gardena and means “needles,” a fitting description of the sharp peaks that define this mountain range. The name Seceda derives from the Latin word siccus (“dry”), referring to its slopes, which can appear arid and rugged depending on the season.
