A perfect waste recycling system and the purification of waste water are among very important cornerstones in Val Gardena

In Val Gardena, the waste treatment system follows very clear guidelines. Every household and company is required to implement meticulous waste separation. Paper, glass, and cans must be placed in the appropriate containers. All other waste must be taken to the recycling centre in Pontives and La Poza. Organic and residual waste are collected directly by the waste collection service. Waste bins and dog toilets in the village contribute to its pristine and clean look. Municipalities and tourist offices are in charge of emptying and replacing them.

The treated waste is used to produce thermal and electric energy.

Pontives waste water treatment plant

Waste water flows into the first filter which stops coarser waste from getting through. The materials stopped by the filters are then sent to the waste treatment plant. The sand and grease traps serve the purpose of removing sand, oil, and grease from the water. The primary sedimentation tank stops the water in its tracks, which allows the solid material to drop to the bottom. This solid material is transported by means of a reamer to a silo. It is then pumped into the thickener, followed by the digester. The waste water is then pumped into an aeration tank which contain microorganisms and bacteria. These feed on the organic substances released in the water and transform them in activated sludge. This machine features a special technology where the activated sludge also adheres to plastic. In the secondary sedimentation tank, the sludge is separated from the water and sent to the thickener/mechanical thickener and then to the digester. In the digester, the organic matter is transformed into methane gas, carbon dioxide, and organic waste thanks to biochemical processes. After the digestion process, the sludge is sent to the post-thickener, drained in another centrifuge, and transported to the disposal site. The methane gas obtained by digesting the sludge is then stored in the gasometer and transformed into electricity and heat thanks to gas engines.

The waste water treatment plant in Pontives processed 3,971.681 m3 of treated water which was used to produce 396.85 MWh electric energy.
